The specific book that she chooses for each piece is sometimes selected to compliment the greater meaning of the finished piece, and at other times the book dictates what the meaning of the piece will be. These pieces are three dimensional with the visual depth being created by the carved out pages of the book. The words that she reveals on the pages of each book are intentionally selected and are integral to the meaning of the piece. At the center of each piece is a character, either human or animal, that becomes the main character in the book. These characters are rendered in black and white, just as a character in a book is revealed in black and white text on the pages. The surrounding setting is rendered in color to accentuate the world that the character inhabits. The details in Valerie's work are intricate and deliberate parts of the piece.
