Artist Statement

The natural world is my inspiration and sanctuary, and I am fortunate to live in a beautiful rural area of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, surrounded by stunning views at every turn and in every season.

I believe that man and nature can work in close harmony together, and my painting reflects that conviction. My landscapes almost always have a human footprint, whether it is a road, a structure, or a planted field. Painting the farms in our area is also my stake in preserving a way of life that is increasingly threatened. I love the solid farmhouses that epitomize the tenets of form and function, and which fit so comfortably into their environment. Oil is my landscape medium, as it is both forgiving and challenging. Generally I work on linen panels, as they are easily transportable in the field. My palette is uncomplicated, largely for ease in mobility outdoors. For larger work I paint on stretched linen or canvas.

My studio work is largely oil pastel, a medium particularly well-suited to the florals and still lifes which celebrate the joyful bounty of nature at her exuberant best. These pieces are created on archival paper, and framed under glass, a requirement of conventional pastels as well.

I always want the viewer to come with me into the landscape or interior of my paintings,  I like to escape to those places, and hope that those who see my work will join me there for an interlude of peace and repose.
