| Wednesday night knitters donate $1,165 to charity! ( $830 to Heifer
International plus $335 to Stoughton Food Pantry )
Every Wednesday night, Woodland Studios stays open later for its ‘Open Knitting Night’, a weekly event, where
knitters can get together to knit and socialize. Last January, the knitters
decided to raise money throughout the year for charity. The project was coordinated
by knitters Connie Murphy and Marsha Stern . Each week they passed around a
donation jar asking knitters to contribute. Also the jar was displayed in-store
so that Woodland’s customers could donate money as well. At the end of the
year, they put up a Christmas tree display with ornaments and other knitted
items like scarves, hats and toys that people could purchase for gifts and all
of the proceeds went to the money jar.
By the end of the year, a total of $1,165 was raised. The
group decided to use $830 of the money for a ‘Knitters Basket’ (Llama, Alpaca,
Sheep, and a Rabbit), a ‘Gardeners Basket’ (trees, rabbits, chickens and bees),
a ‘Flock Of Hope’ (chicks, ducks, and goslings), and a ‘Goat’ from Heifer International.
The balance of the money, $335 goes to the Stoughton Food Pantry.
Heifer International, is a non-profit organization whose
mission is to ‘work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for
the Earth’. Donations to Heifer International are used to buy animals and
provide resources to support sustainable living programs and encourage ‘pass-along’
sharing of animal’s offspring with other families.
