Take a peek behind-the-scenes, people often get surprised at
what goes into Custom Framing...

Hannah Tubbs
Say hello to Hannah Tubbs and Niki Russos! Both have taught framing classes at MATC in Madison, and Niki is certified by the Professional Picture Framers Association. Hannah does most of our projects either in Woodland's workshop or at her home workshop in Monona. Nikki does many of our specialty projects and canvas stretching at her workshop a few miles outside of town. Gary, Cindy and Cire serve more as designers but sometimes pitch in to help with production.

Custom Framing is like building a piece of custom furniture.
That's why, when investing in a Custom Frame, it's important to work with skilled trade professionals... make sure it's done right!

Most framing projects require all of the following services (sometimes more)...

Dry Mounting
The best, most affordable, way to mount posters and photographs. A wax like paper is placed between the piece and the mounting board. Next it is placed in a dry mount press which uses heat and pressure to permanently mount the piece. This is the best way to keep something very flat, but it is not conservation mounting and should not be used for valuable art.

  Conservation Mounting
For original fine art and limited edition prints. There are multiple common methods for conservation mounting; T-hinge (shown), corner mounts, and sew mounts to name a few. Since each project is unique, and there are many ways it can be done, it's important to choose a professional framer.

Mat Cutting
Woodland uses only conservation quality mats. We have hundreds of colors in a variety of papers, textures, prints, fabrics, etc. and can cut multiple mats, in ovals, rectangles or practically any other shape. We create decorative corners and can even do (god forbid) v-grooves! We can also do special discounts for common size quantity orders.

Glass Cutting (also boards)
Hannah using glass/board cutter in Woodland's workshop. We keep a supply of plexi, conservation glass, and museum glass on hand. We are happy to cut glass for people while you wait. We also use the wall cutter for trimming oversized boards.

Frame Chopper
Wood moulding chopper. Usually, Woodland orders its mouldings chopped to size because, since our suppliers all have excellent chopping facilities, its more efficient with less waste. On some projects, we choose instead to order our mouldings in length and chop it to size (as shown) in our workshop. For metal frames, we use a power mitre saw with special carbide blade.

Frame Joiner
Joining and Repairing Frame Mouldings. In most cases, a properly joined wood frame should be both glued and v-nailed. Also, for especially large pieces, they need to reinforced. Often people bring in old frames they want us to repair and restore. Woodland is very interested in preservation of all things and eager to help restore old frames.

Fitting
Gary wiring the back of a picture. The fitting charge is for putting it all together. Cleaning the glass, adding spacers, putting the mat, art, and glass in the frame plus adding backing paper to protect from environmental elements (like insects), and finally attaching hanging wire and wall protectors.

Canvas Stretching
Niki stretching canvas in her workshop. Sometimes, especially for oversize pieces and special projects, the stretching still needs to be done by hand. But for most canvases, the machine does a better and faster job. Stretcher bars come in several thicknesses, and also, we can mount canvas to backing board. Gallery wrapped canvases (stapled on back side) are an affordable way to hang art without having to frame.
