The Design Process - "Woodland's artists can help you frame it like a masterpiece"

"Framing is an art... your framer should work with you like an artist."
Gary, Cindy and Cire
"At Woodland, you get the benefit
 of multiple designers"

When artists, work with artists, they naturally tend to jump into each others projects. Cindy and Gary have worked together for over 25 years as Creative Directors, so picking on each others work is second nature to us. Cire brings a fresh perspective, is studying to be an interior designer, and especially loves framing projects. Finally, our framers Hannah and Niki are not only skilled craftspeople, they are also artists in their own rights. Each project we do, at some point or another, usually gets the scrutiny of at least two or three creative professionals.
The Design Process is the most important step...
because you are "designing a solution to fit your tastes & budget".
Here are some of the key considerations...

Frame Selection
Woodland has over 1,800 styles, one of the largest selections in Dane County. One customer told us, "they've shopped everywhere and nobody has as wide of a selection as Woodland". We have wood and metal frames that represent every style and every price point. Primarily, we work with about a half dozen of the best moulding manufacturers in the world.  We lean toward quality, American and European made mouldings. Some are handpainted, gilded and/or cast from 19th century moulds.

Fillets / Enhancements
Often, for about the price of a second mat, we can add a fillet to make it look like a masterpiece. Also, we have a wide variety of colors and styles of linen liners which can be used instead of a mat, especially for original paintings. These types of enhancements can add tremendously to the appearance and perceived value of any art piece.

Mat Ideas
A classy use of decorative corners. Woodland uses only conservation quality mat board and has hundreds of colors, textures, fabrics and suedes to choose from. Typically, we start with a simple single or double matting approach that will complement, not detract from, the artwork. We also look at floating the mats, adding fillets, or handpainted borders as enhancers. Normally, we shy away from gimmicks like v-grooves because they usually compete with the artwork for attention. However, tastefully done decorative corners (shown here) can add a classy touch to without detracting from the art.

  Mounting Options
Woodland recommends conservation mounts for almost everything. There is no one method because every project is unique and each would have multiple possible solutions. The simplest decision to make is "Conservation Mount" (more costly, archival, not permanent) or "Dry Mount" (less costly, non-archival, permanent). All of the options are discussed and explained as part of the Design Process.

Glazing Choices (glass/plexi)
Why is glazing so important? Conservation glass is always recommended by Woodland. It only costs a few dollars more and offers 97% UV light protection. There are a variety of choices including anti-reflective, very expensive 'museum' glass. Also, plexi-glass made for framing offers UV protection and anti-reflective options, while providing the added benefits of  lightweight, non-breakable material.
