Abstract Mixed Media Collage

Dan Ott has one of the most unique approaches to his artwork that we have ever seen. He works with cut paper squares, tape and paint to make abstract designs. Often he uses junk mail, and cuts it into small square shapes of interesting colors and graphics that catch his eye. He then begins to assemble the squares into large collages that he typically refers to as 'quilts'. Sometimes he overlays the quilts with randomly layered pieces of tape that are often overpainted with washes. The final pieces become very colorful, abstract, mixed media collage / paintings.

Occassionally, Dan likes to involve friends and visitors to his studio with his creations. For example, as one of the featured artists in the 14 South Artists Fall Studio Art Tour he prepared hundreds of squares ahead of time and had them laying out in piles on banquet tables. As people visited his studio, he invited them to sit at the table and put together small combinations of squares. Later, Dan took the hundreds of squares the visitors had assembled and created a large 48" x 72" collage he named the "Fall Tour Quilt" (shown at right).

Dan prints only small, very limited edition canvases and fine art prints of his work. The prints are ordered as one-off prints which means there are never more available on the market than are already sold. He uses Woodland Studios to make his fine art giclee canvases and prints.
